This video is courtesy of the Center for Whale Research in the San Juan Islands ( http://www.whaleresearch.org ). The baby is believed to be the newest member of K-pod and possibly bumps the Southern resident killer whale population to 88.
I almost cried watching this video because of feeling too happy, too surprised, and too amazed. SO MANY ORCAS THERE. I could even spot the babies (whales’ babies are called calfs, just like cows’) with their relatively smaller body size than the adults (which mostly were females by looking at the size of their dorsal fins). The orcas travel in a pod as usual and by looking at the number of the pod’s member, I can see why those pandas of the sea were once called ‘cosmopolitan’.
San Juan Islands for the future!
Beautiful!
